Excavations at Castle St. in Reading uncovered the remains of a fired clay surface thought to have been inside a medieval building. Archaeomagnetic analysis of this surface revealed that it had not attained a particularly high temperature when fired and that the constituent clay material had been particularly susceptible to viscous realignment of its magnetisation direction since the firing event. It was thus only possible to obtain a broad date range of low precision, placing the date of the last firing of the surface between 1000 and 1185 AD, towards the beginning of the medieval period.
