PALYNOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF SEDIMENTS FROM A SERIES OF WATERLOGGED FEATURES AT SLOUGH HOUSE FARM, NEAR HEYBRIDGE, ESSEX

Sediments from four water holes/wells were analysed palynologically. These were of Bronze Age, Roman, Saxon (Sixth Century and Seventh Century) periods respectively. The sediments contained a diverse assemblage of palynomorphs and it was possible to show a change of land use during the Bronze Age. The analysis revealed that, for all periods under review, the site had been set in an open landscape but that woodland was more abundant and diverse in the Bronze Age. During the Bronze Age and Roman periods, the local area seems to have been hedged but, if so, hedges lost their importance in Saxon times. A progressive clearing of the landscape and intensification of pastoral and arable agriculture was recorded.
