Almost all of the Character Area (96%) lies within the Quantock Hills AONB, England’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, being designated in 1956. Around 30% is designated as Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). None of the Character Area is classed as urban, reflecting its rural character.
