Urban development characterises almost all of this area, changing the settings of any farmhouses, barns and other working buildings that were present before significant phases of expansion: - outwards from the medieval city, a process which accelerated further after the fire of 1666 - around existing settlements, areas of common land and along main roads and then canals, particularly from the late 17th century - in increasingly large ‘blocks’ from the late 18th century, the 1920s to 1930s witnessing suburban development over extensive areas in tandem with the development of planning policies intended to constrain growth.
