Needwood and South Derbyshire Claylands, Western Mixed

Author(s): Jeremy Lake

This is a rolling plateau of glacial till, rising to prominent wooded heights above the wide, shallow, central valley of the River Dove. The area is bounded to the south and south-east by the floodplain of the River Trent; to the north and west it grades into the rising ground of the Pennine fringes. The Character Area skirts around the major urban centres of Derby, Burton on Trent and Rugeley, but includes Ashbourne and Uttoxeter; 6% of the area is classified as ‘urban’. Nearly 1% is within the Peak District National Park.
