The Wirral comprises a peninsula formed by the Mersey and Dee estuaries on the north-west edge of the Shropshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire Plain. Of the area, 21% is urban, 18% is arable or horticultural, 31% is improved grassland and 15% is coastal. Just 6% of the area is woodland and 9% is designated as Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
