Sherwood, Eastern Arable

Author(s): Jeremy Lake

This Character Area is a well-wooded and partially industrialised sandstone region, characterised by the woodlands and heaths of the former Sherwood Forest, the historic estates of the Dukeries, large pine plantations, mining settlements and open arable land. The area contains the larger settlements of Mansfield, Worksop, Retford and Ollerton, as well as many smaller towns; 21% of the Character Area is classified as ‘urban’. Despite its prominent wooded, heathy character, it is only 19% wooded and much of the area is arable land.
