Howardian Hills, Chalk and Limestone Mixed

Author(s): Jeremy Lake

The Howardian Hills comprise a clearly defined area of complex landform rising above the low-lying land of the Vales and York, contrasting with the North York Moors to the north and grading into the Yorkshire Wolds to the south-east. Only 1% of the area is classified as being urban, with 82% being agricultural land. Woodland is extensive, covering 13% of the Character Area. Three quarters of the area lies within the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and 3% falls within the North York Moors National Park.
