59 High Street, Ashwell, Hertfordshire: Tree-Ring Analysis Of Elm And Oak Timbers

Author(s): Dr Martin Bridge, Cathy Tyers

A number of elm timbers were initially assessed as being potentially useful for dendrochronology, but were actually found to contain fewer rings than expected. Four oak timbers were sampled, with none of the individual series cross-matching each other, although one series, from a post in the south wall, was successfully dated. It retained 24 sapwood rings, plus another two that could not be measured, and was recorded as having lost up to 5mm of wood on the outside. The final measured ring dated to AD 1451, thus giving a likely felling date around AD 1460, a little earlier than the foundation of the Guild (in AD 1479) that was thought to have been responsible for the building.
