Appleby-In-Westmorland Conservation Area, Cumbria: Historic Area Assessment

Appleby-in-Westmorland has a rich heritage as a market town, dating back to the 12th century, and the neighbouring settlement at Bongate predates the Norman Conquest. The Castle, St Lawrence’s church and Boroughgate, the main street and market place, which links the two, were in existence by 1120. The town was granted its first royal charter, affording special rights to the residents, in 1179. This historic area assessment (HAA) is part of Historic England’s contribution to the Appleby Heritage Action Zone (HAZ). It aims to provide a better understanding of the history, character and significance of the historic centre of Appleby and its buildings, and provide an evidence base for their future management.
