Tattershall Castle, Sleaford Road, Tattershall, Lincolnshire: Tree-Ring Analysis of Oak Timbers of the Moat Bridges 2, 3, and 4

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on 36 samples obtained from oak timbers from three bridges over the moats at Tattershall Castle and three ex situ display timbers. This analysis produced site chronology TATCSQ01, accounting for 23 samples, its 223 rings spanning AD 1759–1981. A further four site chronologies of two samples each were also created, but none of these could be conclusively dated. A further single sample from a display timber was dated individually, its rings spanning AD 1306–91. Interpretation of the sapwood on the dated material gives the display timber an estimated felling date in the range AD 1406–31. The bridge timbers are much later, with some possibly being felled in the late-nineteenth to early-twentieth century, while other bridge timbers were felled in the AD 1970s, and into the AD 1980s and AD 1990s.
