THE CHOLMLEY HOUSE AT WHITBY: An Account of the 'Curious Statue in Solid Brass' which Once Adorned the Courtyard

Author(s): Richard Lea

The following report explores the evidence for the statue of the gladiator, its likely form, and its location. The detailing of the statue in the revised visitor centre audio visual sequence is now based on the argument presented here that it would have been a copy of the famous first-century BC Roman sculpture known as the 'Borghese Gladiator' and now in the Louvre, Paris. The report also concludes with a note on whether it would be appropriate within the present scheme to reinstate a copy of the statue in its original location.
