Tadcaster Bridge, Tadcaster, North Yorkshire: Assessment of Significance

In early 2016, Investigators from Historic England’s Research Group carried out an assessment of the significance of the Grade-II listed Tadcaster Bridge. This followed the collapse of part of the bridge's upstream side into the swollen River Wharfe on the night of 29 December 2015 following record rainfall amounts deposited across much of northern England by Storm Eva a few days previously. The assessment, which comprised a rapid visual inspection and targeted documentary research only, was conducted at the request of Historic England’s Planning Group in order to inform decisions on the bridge’s repair and possible widening. An initial, internal, report with limited circulation was issued on 25 February 2016. In June, both Peter Cross-Rudkin and John Firth brought new documentary information to the attention of the authors regarding the date of construction of the earliest part of the extant structure. The present report revises and replaces that initial report in light of the new information.
