2 Love Lane/64 West Street, 60 West Street, and 64–66 Bridge Street/57 West Street, Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Northumberland: Tree-ring Analysis of Pine Timbers

Analysis undertaken on 71 samples taken from three buildings, resulted in the construction and dating of two site sequences representing timber that appears likely to be imported from Scandinavia. Site sequence BERWICK1 contains 16 samples and spans the period AD 1486–1762 and BERWICK2 contains 30 samples and dates to AD 1607–1770. A timber from the main-range roof of 2 Love Lane/64 Bridge Street has been dated to AD 1756 and one from the rear-range roof to spring AD 1753. The rest of the timbers appear coeval and, hence, also thought to date to the AD 1750s. This suggests that the two ranges are broadly contemporary and supports the mid eighteenth-century date based on other evidence. Timbers dating to AD 1756 and AD 1770 were identified within the roof of 64–66 Bridge Street/57 West Street, providing support for the expected construction date of AD 1760–75. Timbers utilised within the roof of 60 West Street were felled in AD 1762; those of the ground-floor ceiling date to AD 1763/spring AD 1764; those of the first-floor ceiling date to AD 1766/7, whilst two external timbers are estimated to be mid-eighteenth century in date, at the earliest. These, again, support the anticipated second half of the eighteenth-century date.
