28-30 The Close, Newcastle Upon Tyne: Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cathy Tyers

Core samples were obtained from 13 oak and 40 pine timbers in this building near the quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne. The analysis of these samples produced three oak site chronologies, NWCESQ01– ESQ03, comprising two, four, and two samples, these being 156, 122, and 65 rings long respectively, and two pine site chronologies, NWCESQ04 and ESQ05, of 13 and nine samples, these being 362 and 186 rings long respectively. Interpretation of the sapwood on the oak samples would indicate the earliest material was felled AD 1407–25, with further oak material being felled AD 1557–82, and in AD 1616. Despite being compared to an extensive collection of relevant reference material neither of the two pine site chronologies, nor any of the remaining ungrouped pine samples, could be dated. However, the relative dating within the two pine site chronologies has demonstrated the likely contemporary nature of some timbers from different areas within the building.
