Tree-Ring Analysis of Timbers from Meare Fish House, Porters Hatch, Meare, Somerset
Author(s): Dr Martin Bridge
This building is a Scheduled Ancient Monument in the care of English Heritage. A single surviving floor-beam in this stone building is thought to be part of the primary construction phase of the building, and it was hoped this beam might provide a date for this phase. The nearby site of Meare Manor Farmhouse is thought to be of similar age, and it was hoped that a chronology from that site might allow the floor-beam to be dated. Two cores were taken from the beam and matched to each other to produce a single 67-year long ring width sequence. This failed to give consistent matches and remains undated.
