TREE-RING ANALYSIS OF A WOOD ASSEMBLAGE FROM TILBURY FORT, ESSEX, 1988-89

Author(s): C Groves

Of 200 post-medieval samples examined from the excavations at Tilbury Fort only 73 were selected for full analysis. Reference chronologies were produced for both oak and spruce. The oak chronology dates to the period AD 1678 - 1777. A felling date of AD 1778 is given for the oak timbers from a wooden palisade in the outer moat and an estimated felling date range, spanning the late 18th-early 19th century is indicated for oak timbers from structure 1823 on the foreshore. This was the first study of spruce from archaeological contexts to be carried out in Britain. Although the spruce chronology is currently undated the analysis has important implications for both British dendrochronology and archaeology.
