Catridge Farm, Lacock, Wiltshire: The Remains of a Shrunken Settlement

During late spring and early summer 2014 English Heritage’s Assessment Team (West) undertook a detailed survey and investigation of earthwork remains surrounding Catridge Farm, as part of English Heritage’s National Archaeological Identification Survey (NAIS Lowland) pilot project. Shrinkage of the settlement at Catridge appears to have been a gradual process and not confined to the medieval period. While some tenements were probably lost during the14th or 15th centuries through social, economic and environmental change, the 16th and 17th centuries saw a period of investment and rebuilding, a phenomenon witnessed across much of England. Tenements were finally amalgamated around the middle of the 18th century as part of an estate-led drive to adopt new farming techniques at a time when increased efficiency was seen as vital for boosting agricultural production.
